The Medico-Legal Society of Toronto (MLST) was founded in 1950 by a group of physicians and lawyers. The purpose of the MLST has always been to promote medical, legal, and scientific knowledge and to encourage cooperation and understanding between the professions in the interests of justice, patients, and clients.

From Clinical Recognition to Legal Remedy: Navigating the New Tort of Intimate Partner Violence

The emerging tort of intimate partner violence (IPV) presents important considerations not only for healthcare professionals and litigators, but also for lawyers advising on insurance coverage. This cross-disciplinary panel will explore IPV from clinical, scientific, evidentiary, civil litigation and insurance perspectives, with particular attention to the clinical and neurological perspectives on IPV, trauma and coercive control, the role of medical evidence in litigation, and the potential insurance implications of IPV tort claims.

The panel will address:

  • Evidence-based clinical and neurological perspectives on IPV, trauma and coercive control

  • Recognition, treatment and documentation of IPV in healthcare settings

  • Building and responding to civil IPV claims, from both plaintiff and defence perspectives

  • The role of medical and clinical evidence in IPV litigation

  • Insurance coverage issues arising from IPV tort claims, including whether homeowners’ insurance policies may be triggered and the implications for coverage counsel

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received at least one (1) week prior to the event are eligible for a 75% refund. Cancellations received less than one (1) week prior to the event are non-refundable. Delegate substitutions are welcome at any time.
