The Medico-Legal Society of Toronto (MLST) was founded in 1950 by a group of physicians and lawyers. The purpose of the MLST has always been to promote medical, legal, and scientific knowledge and to encourage cooperation and understanding between the professions in the interests of justice, patients, and clients. |
Nicholas joined Brock Medical Malpractice Law as a lawyer in 2023, after having started his journey with the firm as a summer student and then as an articling student. He is driven by a deep commitment to securing justice for patients and their families affected by medical negligence. Graduating from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law with a specialization in Health Law, Nicholas was actively engaged with the University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law, Policy, and Ethics during his studies. His work involved researching the legal implications of mandatory vaccination policies for healthcare workers and gaining practical experience as a legal intern in The Ottawa Hospital’s privacy division. Nicholas also holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in immunology and microbiology from the University of Toronto. This scientific foundation enriches his ability to advocate on intricate medical issues that arise in medical negligence cases. His unique blend of legal and scientific knowledge empowers him to effectively navigate the complexities of medical malpractice law, ensuring effective legal representation and support for patients and their families. Nicholas has represented clients at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and before the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, providing skilled advocacy in both court proceedings and administrative hearings. Dr. Mailis obtained her medical degree from Athens Medical School in Greece, graduating Summa Cum Laude, before moving to Canada in 1978. She completed her specialization in Physical Medicine (FRCPC) in 1982 and later earned a Master’s degree from the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto in 1988. In 2005, she became a Professor within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and for the past 44 years, has dedicated her career exclusively to the field of Chronic Pain Medicine. A pioneer in pain management in Canada, Dr. Mailis founded and directed the Comprehensive Pain Program at Toronto Western Hospital from 1982 to 2015. She later established and continues to lead the Pain & Wellness Centre in Vaughan (2014–present), recognized as the only academic community-based pain clinic in the region offering a unique interdisciplinary pain management program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Throughout her distinguished career, she has received numerous honours, including the 2024 Distinguished Career Award from the Canadian Pain Society. She remains actively engaged in both full-time clinical practice and research. Over the course of her career, Dr. Mailis has treated more than 30,000 pain patients and has authored over 140 scientific publications, making significant contributions to the advancement of pain medicine and rehabilitation science. She has trained numerous students and international trainees, lectured extensively around the world, and has been featured widely in popular media. From 2005 to 2023, Dr. Mailis served as Chair of ACTION Ontario, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing awareness of and management of chronic pain. Since 2009, she has also advised the Ontario Ministry of Health, where she has played an instrumental role in shaping chronic pain management policy and systems of care across Ontario. In addition, she has conducted more than 2,000 medico-legal assessments for both plaintiff and defence counsel. Beyond her clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Mailis is also an accomplished science writer, having published books and numerous articles for the popular press. As a dedicated mentor, she continues to inspire and support students and trainees, with a particular commitment to empowering women and immigrants pursuing careers in medicine, science, and healthcare leadership.
