What the Scan Shows—and What It Doesn’t: Neuroimaging in TBI Across Medicine and Law
Moderated by Dr. David Corey, PhD, Brain Scan Diagnostics
Featured Speakers:
- Dr. Isabelle Zheng, Radiologist, Michael Garron Hospital
- Dr. DJ Cook, Neurosurgeon, Department of Surgery, Centre for Neuroscience Studies, Queen’s University
- Ted Bergeron, Partner, Bergeron Clifford
- Anju Sharma, Partner, AMR LLP
Purpose
This multidisciplinary session brings together radiology, neurosurgery, and legal expertise to examine the evolving role of neuroimaging in traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Grounded in both clinical science and litigation realities, the program will explore the strengths and limitations of conventional imaging, the emerging role of advanced modalities, and how imaging evidence is interpreted, challenged, and applied in the context of causation.
Attendees will gain a balanced, practice-informed understanding of how imaging fits within the broader evidentiary landscape of TBI.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the capabilities and limitations of conventional imaging (CT and structural MRI) in detecting TBI, including considerations related to timing, sensitivity, and common diagnostic confounders.
-
Explain the clinical and conceptual rationale for advanced neuroimaging modalities (e.g., fMRI, DTI), including how they contribute to understanding the relationship between brain structure, function, and impairment.
-
Examine how advanced neuroimaging contributes to causation analysis within a medico-legal context, including its integration with broader evidence, and evaluate its strengths, limitations, and susceptibility to critical scrutiny.
-
Integrate neuroimaging evidence into a broader, multidisciplinary analysis, recognizing where imaging strengthens or fails to substantiate claims of functional impairment.
This program qualifies for 1.5 hours of substantive CPD credits.
