For healthcare providers and lawyers new to the Catastrophic Impairment arena, understanding how CAT status is determined, and your role in that process, is critical to success. This session breaks down the medicolegal pillars for healthcare providers and lawyers, guiding you through the criteria, the players involved, and the stages of the claims process. You’ll learn the essentials of the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), the roles of assessors and lawyers, and how to build strong, defensible evidence from the start. You’ll also learn the differing perspectives of plaintiff and defence counsel. By the end, you’ll have a foundational roadmap for approaching CAT cases with increased confidence, competence, and steps to enhance your practice.
What You’ll Learn:
- CAT Basics: SABS criteria, who decides CAT status, and when it happens in the claims process.
- Preparation Essentials: Training, understanding the file history, and knowing your role in the process.
- Healthcare Provider Insights: Scope of practice, the essential role of mentorship, surveillance implications, and features of defensible medicolegal evidence.
