The Challenge of Social Media:
Communication, Empowerment, Reputation and Damage
Speaker: Michael Power
Internet and web-based
technologies have fostered the phenomena of user and consumer generated content
known as “social media”. Patient, physician, nurse communities have
emerged to facilitate the exchange of idea and information. In the United
States to date, 351 hospitals use social networking tools. While
Facebook, YouTube and Twitter may be familiar, other services such as blogs,
mashups and online communities have had the extraordinary effect of permitting
not only the widespread and rapid dissemination of information but also
exchanges between individuals - sometimes with adverse consequences for
healthcare providers. Healthcare organizations with employees and consumers
need to understand the effect of these phenomena can have on their reputations
and address the use of social media accordingly. This session will:
·
Build awareness of the range and extent of social networking
tools
·
Explore how social media can affect an organization’s reputation
·
Consider how best to address employee use of social media,
including the development of social
media policy
